I was recently asked what it was I like about this image, and so wrote my thoughts down in more detail. Perhaps others might be interested..
Neither of the figures are looking at the camera and both have their gaze fixed on the patch of seaweed which appears to me to be uninteresting. So there's a question, what are they really looking at? There's room for the imagination here.
I like the contrast between the overly dressed woman shielding herself from the sun and the scantily clad young child who is enjoying the sun's warmth. The contrast between the modesty associated with age and the comparative immodest spontaneity of youth. This is mirrored by their postures too, I think.
I also like the concept of the elderly lady walking slowly toward the edge of the frame (to the edge of her life, perhaps) and the young girl bounding into frame (with her life in front of her?). They could even be the same person at different stages of life. This view seems to be backed up by the altered perspective, making the child larger than the woman.
The tones are good, the light from the central bank of clouds seems to reinforce the centrality of the two characters by spreading itself over their heads.
Regards, Gary

Paul's right. There's a certain something in this image which most of us would find hard to capture. A great photojournalism style.

As ever - very special. If I could achieve anything as 1/2 as good as this, I would be smiling.
