About I'm taking an online course from The Picture Perfect School of Photography and this image is a portrait I took some months ago of the artist, Michael Fuchs. The class is a "The Art of B&W, Infrared and Sepia in Photoshop" and Danilo Piccioni is the instructor. The technique here involves B&W conversion, Sepia toning, specialized sharpening, dodging & burning as well as masking.
Comments are always welcomed.
~ Warm regards, Rocky

Thanks very much, James. Actually, it sounds more complicated than it is.

I think the core of this technique is to make a duplicate of the background layer and run a High Pass Filter on the copy layer (Filters>Other>High Pass). I set this to about 30 px. Then set the layer Blending Mode to Hardlight. That's done before converting the image to B&W. Same thing with the dodging and burning.

The results really depend on the original image and in this case, a low-key image works best.

Thanks again James! ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Don't worry about taking my time, Mohsen. I am thoroughly enjoying meeting new people and very talented artists here. Yes, the flash can be very harsh sometimes, however, I always bounce the flash so the light is diffused. In this case, I was bouncing the flash off of a reflector just to my left.

I hope those "strange feelings" are good ones. LOL! Thanks again for the compliments. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Yes dear it's really great in B&W..nice converting! I also have a SB800 Nikon, I use it with my F90x. I'll never shot this kind of portrait works with a flash, I just want to use soft box lights. I know it's not a usual style but I do in this way! maybe I abhor the hard reflections on face or the created flares..but in this portrait work, I think that hard reflections of light worked well..I meant help us to get the feeling inside..for me, as I said before, full of strange feelings!

sorry for taking your time,
it's a really creative and awesome portrait work, indeed!

Thank you very much, Mohsen. This was taken in a small studio. The lighting was just two lights; a 4ft soft box and the Nikon SB800 speed flash. I also used a handheld meter. It was originally in color and when I first shot it I thought it was just too dark. However, later when I converted it to B&W it took on a completely different appearance that changed the whole feeling of it. A bit of an accident really. Thanks for the kind comments and for looking at my work. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Thank you very much, Nacho! I'd love to ask you how you get your images so saturated? Do you use the Merge to HDR in PS? Or perhaps you are using some other method. Great portfolio you have. The trip to Cuba looks fantastic! ~ Warm regards, Rocky

I'll tell you, Linda, what is perplexing me is it looks like you're shooting through a window that is being covered with rain water while the puddle looks like it is being shot half underwater. Very cool shot. Have a great Sunday too! ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Thank you Rocky for your very detailed response...Yes, of course, actually I had gone out that day to get some different images, but we got caught in the rain, and ducked in under a large cement covering in the condos, the light was coming in from both directions....it was diffuse because of the covering, and the weather...hope I'm making sense? There was a puddle and I took the shots and inverted them, I don't think other than a levels adjustment, an inversion, and a crop, that there was any other post processing...I hope that helps to answer your question Rocky. And thank you for your kind words about that image as well. It is one of my favorites, and one of the things I love about photography is like Forest Gump says, "you never know what you're gonna get" I often go out to shoot one thing and find other things, as it turned out that day the rain was a good thing. Thank you again, have a lovely Sunday!! :)

Wow! Thank you so much, Linda! It's wonderful to meet a talented artist such as you here. The course has just ended and it was very good. Since I'm a long time PS user, there wasn't much in the early lessons new for me. The online videos are very well done and easy to understand. I pushed the instructor to teach me one of his more specialized techniques and he was very accommodating. For me that was worth the price of the class ($200).
Can I ask you; how did you shoot "The Man In the Puddle?" It's a compelling yet perplexing image for me. Of course, I LOVE images like that! :)
Thank you again for the kind comments. ~ Warmest regards, Rocky

Thank you very much, AlZahraa! I wasn't sure if people would like this image since it really isn't a flattering shot of the subject. However, this is one of several in a studio session that seemed to lend it self well to this B&W technique. Thank you for the very kind comments and for looking at my work. ~ Warm regards, Rocky
