Hi Luis,
The sculpture part of this image is actually about life size and consists of half of the sculpture. The women with the sick or dying child is holding out her hand to another person and child that is leaving for America. The sculpture is copper I believe (green patina) It is right across the road from Harvard Yard in Cambridge Common. Across Mass. Ave.
As I wrote in the about. The trees, snow and fog are from a ravine down the street from where I live here near Toronto.

I think the setting that I put the sculpture in might be better suited for it than the park it is really in. I was kind of joking about this with my wife. But there is no denying that those misty trees help with the atmosphere.

Great image of despair, Andre! I like how you've combined the two, for a grim and sad atmosphere. The statue is very compelling, it looks real, and placed in the woods among bare branches and snow and low lighting really compounds the effect. It is very well done and perfectly blended as perspective and lighting levels. Great work! Ina

Thanks for your nice comment on this one.
I'm glad you had such a strong reaction from just the thumbnail, because quite often this type of image fails to attract attention in the thumbnail size.
It was a challenge to match and blend the two images.
The background was a dreary, misty, overcast day. Taken right down the street from us near one of the entrances to a hiking trail.
The sculpture was taken last May on a bright sunny day in Cambridge / Boston.
I converted them both to greyscale and opened them side by side. I tried to match them as much as I could before combining them. I then did more work after the merge to get the right softness and toning.
I think the trick is in the matching before merging.

Hi Thilo,
There is a quote by some famous photographer that says something like.
"If your image does not provoke a strong reaction, one way or another, then you it has no purpose!"
I think, even at the amatuer level this is quite true. We can usually predict which of our images might stir things up, or get a strong comment from viewers.
As I wrote to Ray though I have to give most of the credit on this one to the person who created the sculpture. Photographers very often are the "messengers" of someone elses creation :)

I took a few shots of this sculpture with the intention of doing something like this. I just didn't get around to it till now. The original setting is Cambridge Common. It is a nice park, but it just didn't have the atmosphere that this misty forest lends to the image.
My wife tells me that I've managed to make it look even sadder than the original.
I suppose that is a good thing in this case. I think your comment proves to me that this is capable of bringing out strong feelings in people, so I'm proud of that.
I can't take too much credit for this though, after-all I didn't create that fantastic sculpture.

Andre, if you hadn't have stated that it was two blended shots I would have never known. My heart leaped out when I saw the thumbnail, my first thoughts were that you'd actually captured some scary woman wandering through the snowy woods - until I read your "about" I can now be not so scared!!!
This is excellent, the light on both images seem to match well, were they both taken on a cloudy diffused sort of day (If you can remember) or did you hack them a little in PS?
I love this Andre, it is excellent!!!!

Very dramatic mood created here Andre and both images sit well one with the other. Excellent tonal finish and amazingly detailed. An aweful historical note that is still being repeated in far too many places in the World today. A dark and sombre reminder for all of us more fortunate than those millions that continually suffer. You must have viewed this one while I was gone searching the web for information on the statue that I swiped for the image.
You're right, the statue is in Boston and the woods are in my neighborhood. It took a while to get it to blend nicely. I think it was worth it.
I was going for creepy with this one. My images have been a little on the sweet side lately :)
