About I've been told that this is the way Swans sleep. I snuck up on this one to within about 15 feet while he was standing in about 6 inches of water like this. I could see he was watching me because his eyes were opening and closing.
Full optical range of the telephoto was used. converted to greyscale and levelled for optimum feather detail in PS.
Taken on the Rouge River, near the mouth at Lake Ontario. Jan./06

I was surprised to find a small gift package come in the mail last week from the "Canadian Wildlife Federation". I entered this image into a monthly contest called "Reflections Of Nature" Apparently, this image came in Runner-up position for the month of May/06, and is featured on their Photo Gallery website.

Yeah, I've found out since that many birds sleep like this. Ducks, geese flamingos etc.

You are absolutely correct about the comments. I am guilty of shameless promotion of my own images!! If anyone really cares to find out the true number of comments by other people on my images, they can divide by two and come up with a pretty close number. I also consistantly visit every persons portfolio that comments on one of my images to make some kind of comment in a sort of courtesy payback. It's just the way I've chosen to participate here.
I've thought about going the extreme other route of just posting and not responding to comments or re-paying a comment. But, I don't like that idea much.

Thanks very much Stan.
This was one of those images that I had a very good feeling about as soon as I saw it on the screen. Allthough the pose has been taken many times before, those feathers just looked great. My only regret was that the eye definition was not separated enough from the black beak. I guess I shouldn't complain too much. :)
Thanks again.

Hello Marcus,
Nice to hear from you again. You have been away quite a while.
To answer your question about why it didn't win, I would say probably because I sent it in to the contest before I learned from you how important the eyes are in bird images. If I were to do one like this today, I would definitely make sure that the eye was glossy and well defined.

As I understood from your description the swan was about 5 meters from you. Ones I was lucky as well to approach about the same distance to swan having 6 babes. So I can understand how you was feeling... face to face. Very good photography and therefore well deserved award. Congratulations!

Hi Mary,
I honestly didn't know they did this either when I took this image, but since I originally posted it, I've seen a few others similar. I think Geese, Swans, Flamingos and a lot of other long necked birds will rest this way. I think you are right about the light on the feathers and the semi-erotic curves make this image. I'm very happy with this one!

Thank you Doyle,
I was surprised to see some comments coming in for this one once again. I guess they must have had it on the front page for a little while. The award was given a few months ago for this one. I'm pretty proud of this one because I had posted quite a few until that point, without an award of significance. When I finished the Photoshop work on this one, I thought it might be a contender. Sure enough, it is my most popular image. :) I'm very happy with this one!

Hi Toni,
There has been quite a learning curve in Photoshop over the last few years. I feel I've only touched the surface. The additional challenge is getting the transfer to Usefilm to show up as well as it does on our own monitors.
One thing I never doubted since coming to this site was my "eye". That might sound a little arrogant, but I think you have to have some confidence just to show work here. :)

Thanks Thilo,
I felt good about this one too! I had a feeling it was just a little special when I was finished with it. As I said to Fadel, it's not that often that I get excited about my own work enough to call my wife over to have a look before I post it. This one just felt right! I even predicted that it might be an award winner. Considering I hadn't had a "real" award in over a year, I was taking a chance with that prediction. :)

I agree Mark,
Sometimes crawling through the muck and bushes is the only way. But it wasn't that heroic in this case. The swan was in the water and I was still warm and dry on the river bank :)
I'm glad I went for some close cropped shots like this one!

Sometimes we have to do unglamorous things like walking through muck just to get to elegant things such as these. It really is the perfect moment. Timeless and classic.

Thanks Fadel,
It has been a while coming! I am just glad it was this one that put me up there. I really had a good feeling about this one. I even called my wife and youngest son over to see it before I posted it. I never do that. I started joking with them that this one was going to get an award :)
I did wish the eye had a little bit more of a glint in it so that it was visible. (some of the other shots had better detail in the eye, but not as nice a composition) In the end, I chose the better composition and detail over the eye being open. It would have been nice though. I even thought about trying to alter it in PS, but I figured I would leave well enough alone.

A beautiful image Andre. Gorgeous in B&W bringing focus to all the fine details. The curves in the way the swan is sleeping makes this image so special giving it the softness and graces of which the swan is characteristic.

Congratulations for the EC award Andre. Very well deserved and great to see this on the front page.

Andre, Cool capture and you did it right. I like the the tight but very balanced composition and a clever one - it is giving very strong abstract feel for the picture although it's a great nature shot. Good choice of gray tones here working great with lines created by swan's head, a beak and wings. I like the details of the feathers. Great for EC, well deserved, my congratulations.

Cheers, n.j

P.S. I just added you to my friends list so this way I have two of my friends being awarded on the same day. Pleasure for me, my privilege and good reason to be happy.

Thanks Ray,
I'm very pleased to get an award for this one. I had a good feeling about it when I was preparing it. Congrats on your Donor of the Day award today too! I got that one once about six months ago. It seems to bring quite a few new visitors the your portfolio.

Hi Ina,
Thanks for the congratulations.
You may have touched on the reason why the award was given for this one. The image is nice, with a lot of detail and a composition that is easy on the eye. But it's that little bit of out of place wisp of feathers near the beak and eye that put it over the edge and make it special for people. I can't take credit for that feather being out of place. I can't even say I knew about it when I took the shots. IMO it's that little bit of imperfection that separates the usual from the unusual in an image.

Thanks for all your support Rashed!
I am very honored to get the EC for this one. I had a good feeling about the picture when I was preparing it. I was very happy with the results personally. The EC Award is a nice bonus!

Thanks Mervo,
I've never really paid too much attention to the swans before until I saw this one in this position. It was just crying out for a picture to be taken! He let me get quite close. And, the eyes were blinking open and closed. Acouple of the other shots show a slight glint to the eye, which was good. But the rest of the image wasn't as pleasing as this one.

Congratulations on the EC Award, Andre! What a beautiful shot and great composition! I love the feather details, and especially the little feathers standing up around the beak and the eye, lovely swan portrait and B & W tones! My compliments, Ina

Beautiful and a pose often captured, you did a good job with the tones and the light and I like the way that the eye isn't obviously open or closed, it could be either in my opinion.

Thanks Kevin,
I thought I would post a swan pic that was just a little more unusual than the standard issue. We have all seen graceful swan shots. But I figure it's not every day that you get to see one sleeping like this.
Thanks for visiting Kevin.

Thanks Susie,
I'll think about doing a collage with some of the shots. I wasn't completely happy with the second image though, so I removed it for the time being.
I think this one comes across as the stronger of the two.

Thanks Dave,
I liked the timeless look of B&W for this shot. I figured it could have just as easily been taken 100 years ago. I like that about some images.
I wasn't completely happy with the other swan image, so I removed it. Thanks for commenting on both of them!

The feathers are very well exposed which brings out the details in them. Also the swan pose and your composition work well together. Great work.

I've never seen anything like this Andre. These two photos would make a nice collage, maybe with a third one added? This is a cool natural abstract.

Amazing detail and textures there, Andre! Good b/w toning, as well!
