  Q. Lightweight tripod for travel through Europe?

Asked by Kelly C    (K=1358) on 3/15/2009
Hi all -
I'm heading to Europe this summer, and plan to take my Nikon FE, a few lenses, and a tiny digital camera -- but my tripod weighs a ton. I have a Manfrotto 3265 head and was wondering whether I can remove it from the #3021 legs and reattach to a more trekking-friendly set. The head really may be too large itself, though.
Alternatively, any suggestions for a lightweight, quality tripod under US $100 would be greatly appreciated. I do not need a great height extension or much flexibility in terms of camera position - just something durable to help me capture some nighttime shots. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use the quick-release plates I already have [the ones with the 3265 head, I think they're the "3157N Quick Release Plates"] as I may take multiple bodies.
Would any one recommend the gorillapods?
Thank you,
Kelly

Hi Kelly!

I also use the 3265 head with my Nikons and love it, but for travel I find it too heavy and unwieldy. I travel with a 718SHB - it's not that light and the head is built in, but it's small. Also the head has 2D control with one adjustment and you can invert the centre column (this is "unofficial" - you have to snap off the plastic cap, but it works...). The legs are in 4 sections, so it can be a bit of a pain to extend fully, but there will always be compromises with a tripod for travel and it's in your price range.

Hi AJ --

Thanks for the suggestion. I took a look at the 718SHB, and it's now in my shopping queue. Thanks!

Kelly
