On a U/F member's advice I thought I would ask for some advice as to buying a new camera.
I am currently shooting with an Olympus compact and while it's a good little camera I am getting increasingly frustrated with the inability to manually override settings, it's zoom and the options available. I'm wanting a grown up camera!
Up until now I have been doing the "theoretical" research; magazines, articles, studied the types of cameras used on U/F and have narrowed down to a few options;
1. Purchase a Canon/Nikon SLR where once the "body" becomes dated/obsolete/inadequate, the lenses can be transferred to an updated model. Canon EOS with 2 lenses retails at $1500. Not many stores are wanting to stock Nikon at the moment..problems with the supplier..??
2. Purchase another SLR brand, lesser features, lesser options, half the price and transition my knowledge base until am ready for more expensive model.
3. Purchase another compact brand, more features, more options (than current compact), half the price of SLR and transition my knowledge base until am ready for SLR.
Someone, who's opinion I value highly, advised me to buy a camera who's limitations are extensive...that I shouldn't be limited by the camera (which is how I feel at the moment).
I am very interested in landscapes and portraiture and eventually would like to experiment with macros. Am travelling to Italy next year and I know that there will be family and scenery worthy to capture (so advice on lens to start off with too [what with the travel angle] would be great). Also, I have a commercial idea which I am interested in pursuing in the long term..which may impact on the advice of what I should/shouldn't consider.
Pro's and con's, advice...oh, my budget? I think at this stage, $1000-$1200 for the camera itself.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
