  Q. Aperture 2 neccessary?
Stephanie  Green
Asked by Stephanie  Green   Donor  (K=86) on 7/5/2008
Hi everyone,
Okay I have been using bridge and then opening up my files in Camera Raw (Command/R) and then doing any neccessary adjustments in photoshop CS3. Is there anything special that Aperture2 can offer me that these programs cannot?
Thanks:)
Steph

I don't know Aperture, but there are a lot of programs that do their thing better than Photoshop and ACR.

PS (with ACR) is a great allround tool, but that doesn't mean it can't be beat.
Comparing it to specialty tools is like comparing a Swiss Army knife's main blade to a surgeon's scalpel and wondering why surgeons don't use a Swiss Army knife for surgery.

you're not the first one to do that, I'm prone to do it myself in fact

If you already have Photoshop you do not need "Aperture". Having said that, "Aperture" is very good at adjusting exposure, sharpness, tone's etc. but is no good for manipulating images in any other way.If you have time, patience and a good memory then Photoshop is the only program you need, it's worth it's weight in gold but.......very difficult to master.

I have used pretty much all the image editing programmes.

PS is great and have been using it sice version 3 way back when.In saying that I use lightroom on a PC and Aperture on my Macs.

Personal preference really govern your decisons, I generally flip between the programmes when I need to and aI am lucky enough to have all of them, I am professional graphic designer and photographer.

My final position: Horses for courses! I love all them!

Aperture is more like Lightroom, a companion to Photoshop. Bridge works well and you may not need to consider either -- but Lightroom shines brightly in managing a large collection of images and making non-destructive changes as well as volume import and export operations. If you are happy with Bridge and CS3 then do not bother with the cost of either Aperture or Lightroom. If you feel that you need more "power" for work-flow management and tight integration with Photoshop then Adobe Lightroom 2 is a better bet than Aperture (IMHO).
--Best wishes,
Jan
