Taran,

I did not use the dodging tool at all, but was trying out some other ideas. This was really a bit of a quick experiment.

For a more carefully done BW conversion, see from the same series: http://www.usefilm.com/image/876575.html

hi lily,

You really captured a nice scene here, the composition is good, as is the timing. My main gripe is the aggressive dodging you have done to your main subject. Beleive it or not, UF thumbnails are notorious for showing such innocent manipulation. Here, we can clearly see that the ocean near your subjects is of a different shade of gray than the rest of you composition, this is distracting. Yes, illuminating your main subject is important, don't get me wrong, but here I think you have created more trouble by doing so. Instead of lightening the area around your surfers, I think a better choice would be to used a small soft edged brush in PS, and just lighten their faces and bodies a tiny bit, making sure you don't touch the surrounding ocean. In your defence, the beach is almost impossible for a digital camera of any kind, since the light waves and dark sea create dynamic range difficulties for CCD sensors. Here, you can tell there is no detail in either the wetsuits, nor the breaking waves (my guess is you tried to increase the contrast somehow). This really isn't your fault, we are all victims of this technological limitation. Anyways, I normally don't critique this harshly, but your portfolio is competent, so... :)

Thanks for sharing. cheers, t
