Amazing picture! I'm glad you commented my picture so I could navigate to your portfolio... In my perception it's surrealistic picture with karmic sense in it :-)! I can see not only your technical proficiency but delicate sense of color and composition. Bravo!

Precisely! We can get real nitpicky about it and say then, that only photos taken with a basic, no bells and whistles camera, no alternative processes applied in the darkroom, just straight developing, are real photography.

Sassy, right on,right on, Sista!...i use film,so if i had a darkroom and knew how to use it ;> i guess i could have toned this image and "manipulated" it there instead of on my PC with an imaging edit program...

Gayle this is your masterpiece! You have taken a wonderful picture which would have stood alone and brought it to a whole new realm. The tones and light are magnificent, the reflection inspired. I simply cannot express any more succinctly what James, Neal and Rebecca have already stated. As to it no longer being photography, I tend to disagree. How is using 'other materials' such as PS any different than using filters and special lenses and whatever other accessories available. You might even go so far as to say that setting the aperture and shutter speed are technical tools. I am a huge fan of IR photos for instance and have yet to achieve that effect using editing software. I have seen a few that have and it is a lot harder and requires talent to create an image mirroring the tools of the trade. I am quite frankly tired of hearing that using PS is a cheat.

Foto di sapore "gotico" e un po tetro rende bene l'idea dell'inesarabile distruzione

Mr. Loy.. It's my understanding that "graphic art" is the use of "other materials", ie: pen, paint, other photos, found objects...et.al. to enhance or create a "piece". What Gayle has done here is use the image itself to make the enhancement. Rather than make a puzzle of it, or a collage of bits of the original to re-create the image. Using the image to simulate a reflection of itself.. thats art baby! Besides..it works so-dang-well!

WOW! This one really reaches in and grabs me by the soul! It definately breathes. It breathes the cold moist breath of those no longer here, but yet, are they really gone? Or left here, trapped in those decaying walls...

Another one of your emotionally potent images. What I found really exciting was your "about." This is exactly right! You have raised the whole endeavor to the next level. When Jim Loy says it's a graphic art, he's certainly right. It's graphic after all - we can't hear it. And it certainly an art. But no longer photography??? From the beginning photographs have been manipulated to the full extent of the technical possibilities. I think instead of saying, "It's no longer photography; it's graphic art," one should say, "These are no longer snapshots; they're art." And further more, they're "fine" art.

But then it is no longer photography... it becomes graphic art. A subtle, yet definite separation. It is pleasing to look at, though.

hi,James..thanks for "getting it" ;> ..you articulated very well exactly how i feel about the tools at hand...given a choice between an image devoid of imagination but technically "right",and one which has a touch of magic or a sense of wonder but has some technical flaw,i would choose the latter!..drop by anytime..gayle

Gayle, I'm astonished! Not only have you taken a breathtaking original image, you've created artwork with it! You know many decry the use of technology to manipulate images, therefore negating their worth. I disagree, as you have so proven them wrong! The photographers toolbox is more than film and darkroom.. Stunning, stunning image! 7 for you! It certainly does speak your inner eye, and captivates mine!
