Spent all day in Redwood NP up there and didn't get one this good. Actually, we didn't get one at all. Those Elk were bedded down and hiding for some reason and we just couldn't stay another day. So, from that standpoint, I'd say the lighting wasn't all that bad! Sometimes they just don't pose for you, right? Great shot!

Hi Brigitte!! I was pleasantly surprised to hear from you after so long. I was kind of side-tracked because I started a Wedding Photog business and concentrated alot of effort into that! I still love your work and will check back from time to time!!! -Darren- http://www.darrenarenaphotography.com

Yeah, Riny... I was able to get in quite close... but the elk seemed docile and content with just grazing in the field. Once in awhile one would look up, but mostly they were head down feeding. I had to be a little patient for this shot. Don't think I'd want to be this close during rutting season (in the fall) when they are quite a bit more defensive. This shot is uncropped and used the telephoto lens to the max reach.

Thanks StingRay for your very kind comments and your visit. It's funny and I know you didn't mean it the way I'm about to explain to you, but when you said "...this, for me, makes the shot come alive." you struck on something that kind of bugged me about this shot. What I thought was good about it was that it was a very clear and sharp closeup of this amazing wild animal that is so rarely seen in our state and that I was able to get so close to it. The good thing for me was that when I got these shots, the elk was very still, almost as if it was a statue... that was good because I knew I could get very sharp images and keep the ISO/Shutter Speed low, but it did lack a sense of "liveliness"... the whole photo looks to me as if it was taken at a museum of natural history... lol. I will take time to seek out something with more "action" in it next time, but this time I was so excited to even get a decent shot of it, I didn't think much beyond just getting a shot that was exposed well and focused. I too am happy that the texture came out so well in the antlers... at this time it is like velvet, until fall when the antlers harden, ready for battle. They are truly gorgeous and majestic animals. Hugs back to you, too.

I like the tight crop on this beast Brigitte, I love the details in the face and the textures in the antlers. I especially love the catch light in the eye, this, for me, makes the shot come alive. Well done sweetie. HUUUUUUGS and best wishes......Ray

Thanks so much Joe, for your detailed critique. The lighting wasn't exactly perfect for that kind of shot that "pops", but it was at least overcast and cloudy which did produce nice details in all areas. Maybe I will get lucky one day and nail it right on :-) But I felt I was rewarded well for my first experience at capturing wild elk... I was lucky to get in close and was patiently waiting for the elk to raise it's head (it had it's head lowered for what seemed like an eternity, grasing on the grass). When it did raise it's head, I snapped away and was pleased with the outcome. Next time I'll have someone hold a gold reflector aimed at it's head... just kidding... that would probably get me gored by the antlers! eeek! By the way, the next upload is of the entire elk... let me know what you think of it if you don't mind. :-) Thanks again... wishing you all the best, Brigitte

Thank you Stan... the nifty 250 does deliver again... have to say I really like it for the price... it's amazing! Appreciate your very detailed comments, as always. The next photo I uploaded is of this same elk showing the elk completely. Hope you and your family are enjoying the summer. :-)

As CC, it's got the diagonal on the face and horns, and the grass just behind. It's almost as if one wants the deer to be just slightly more in the photo. And one does wish the light hit the face differently. But still, what should be in the photo is in focus. And it's good job.

Nice detail and color of this Elk. I like the soft b/g that gives a nice contrast to the animals strong color and tones. Nice light on the head and horns. The nifty 250 strikes again. Nice work. be well, stan
