About This was taken at Antietam National Battlefield, a Civil War battlefield that is tucked away in western Maryland. Because of its remote location, it appears very much as it did when the battle took place. Antietam (and Gettysburg) halted the efforts of the Confederacy to bring the war to the North and protected the city of Washington. Both Antietam and Gettysburg were the sites of terrible, terrible carnage. By the end of the day, 23,000 soldiers from both sides were killed and wounded at Antietam – more deaths than America had experienced in Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, and Spanish-American War combined – and nine times as many Americans killed or wounded as on D-day, known as the "longest day" of World War II.

Peace.

Glad you like this one Ian -- it's one of the more conventional images, but it shows the church very much as it looked at the time of the battle. I'm not really a Civil War scholar, but this battlefield is about an hour away -- and because it is remote and relatively unchanged -- it really has an impact on me.

Thanks for visiting.

Great shot and excellent historical info Maryanne. The building looks so sturdy and well built with straight lines and very well maintained. Thanks for sharing.

Maryanne,
Excellent photograph, the colors are vibrant and true. The About sections you have for your Antietam series do a lot to bring the viewer into the photo beside your obviously well taken exposures. Thanks!

Historic photo below taken by Alexander Gardner, and assistant to Matthew Brady, who took 70 photographs of the battlefield starting just two days after the battle. This was the first time an American battlefield had ever been photographed before the dead had been buried.
