About This is a scan of a print I made in the darkroom today. Over the past few months I have been trying to teach myself how to make prints. (This is why I've been underactive recently on Usefilm). It seems easy, but I realise more and more that it is as much of an art as photography is itself. For those who are familiar with the technique (perhaps not many anymore?), this is on Ilford MG IV paper, the base exposure (on the paper) was 15sec at f8 (grade 5)while dodging the face area for about 10 sec of this. Then I burned in the upper half with an additional 15 sec (grade 4) and then the buildings on the right another 15 sec (grade 1 -- to get some detail)
For those of you who really want to take control, I strongly recommend doing some old fashioned darkroom work. It really makes you appreciate photos so much more. It takes some time (this one took me about 45 min to get right..) but the results make you really happy and you could never replicate this with a computer printer.
For those of you who are old hands at this, hats off to you! I am just a beginner....
Regards to all my friends (even if I'm quiet these days!!)

congrats for this fabulous shot, but not sure about two things nonetheless: first of all, your statement that you can not get something like this is in digital world; I have to recognize is difficult to get the tonal range and the intrinsic quality of film itself but not sure; and secondly a minor nit: I'd prefer the girl was looking outside instead directly to the camera; anyway, this is a superb capture with a super post-process. Congrats for the award

Omar, congratulations on Photographer of the Day award, very well deserved. Darkroom work is another project in itself. Good job with this image.

Emotional mood, Smart monochrome, helping to indulge into this spiritual mood.hazy backgroud, yet a sharp flower infocus for the scenario. however the look of the lady in the picture is distracting the mood, she is looking to you instread of the flower. but you still force me to love the photo with such an excellent photo directing and realization

Hello Omar, I like the mood & tone of this photograph. Nice thirds by placing subject to right of frame & giving her the room to gaze @. The flora is perfectly placed between buildings, I do echo's Mia's comment regarding the spot, if it can't be removed in the negative I'd do so in PS. The technique you used during the process is called "Split Filtered", I too am still printing in the darkroom & do the same from time to time as well as toning traditionally (Wet). Warm congrats for the award, best wishes.

How truly odd that it took this long. When I left it, it just disappeared into computerland someplace. I note that you won awards for this image and I congratulate you!

Hi Mia,
I?m not sure why but your comment only appeared in my inbox this week!
I appreciate very much that you took the time to look at my image and make such thoughtful comments. I readily admit that I am a newcomer to printing and it is very helpful for me to receive feedback from people like you who have so much more experience. I am still trying to figure out philosophically how much alteration I ought to do to the image. On the one hand I do like the spontaneous feeling that comes from a shot with some irregularities but then I do appreciate that an image is nothing if not the concrete projection of an inner vision that need not be a mere replica of the world as the eye sees it.
I will take your advice and continue to study the works of the great masters. Unfortunately, my work does not permit me to spend nearly as much time as I would like with photography, so it may be that I may never attain perfection!
Omar

Great Picture Omar! It makes me happy every time when I see a picture, taken on NEGATIVE, and also made the print itself in the lab.
No PS - That is photograpy!

Hi, very good darkroom-work, congrats, like the light-situation and also the soft light in her face.
Its a wonderful and creative Hobby. I learned it in a workshop and it was funny to see the own b/w-prints:)

Hi Omar, I just happened to notice this image. Since I'm a b/w fan and had my own darkroom for over 7 years, let me congratulate you on exploring what is the most demanding of all photographic art forms. B/W is also (imho) the most beautiful photo art form as well. I'm not going to pick this apart since there are some fine classical elements in the image but three items stand out that hurt the strength of your composition. One: I think it hurts to have her eye looking at you while the image is taken. Two: burn in the bottom of the right corner completely, if any element does not add to the composition, then it detracts. Three: when you look at the attached image, there is an odd shape on the left hand side which I circled. I would have gone to extreme lengths to get rid of it.
In summary, rejoice, you have embarked upon a path that will change how you view imaging completely. Ansel Adams was quoted as having said something like it took him 13 years to make the very first image from what he saw in his mind to what he achieved on the print.
I typically took about 1 full week of experimenting in the darkroom with different developers, dodging, burning and selenium toning before I would be satisfied there was nothing else I could do to improve the image. Another really great printer is John Sexton. You can look him up in Google if you desire.

Omar, you've done a great job and achievement, my friend. Regardless of this beautiful moment, lighting, and outstanding BW, I also salute you for sparing your time doing the conventional darkroom yourself. I've been doing digital darkroom, but never try the conventional one; I think I might try to purchase a film camera and learn the darkroom technique..:)
Thank you for sharing this wonderful moment of yours.
My best regards,
Hanggan

Hi Omar,

that's a fine portrait with the differences in lighting and the "hey, I'm trapped" look of your favorite model (your wife?). your experiments sounds great. maybe I will do that one day as well. good old-fashioned things come back.

best wishes,
Thilo

Hi Mariana,
Thanks for dropping by! I like your blog site, you have a really creative mind! I love the poem about riding around in the car and the 10 ton truck... Strange for me, because that's somthing that I tell my beloved too... but you make it sound much better..
I'm happy you left a comment because now I'll look out for your work..

Great job Omar. Of course, the photo and I mean compo, subject etc. (apart from the darkroom part) is really great as well. So even if it were done digitally, it would be ok. But I agree, technically the old fashioned way still is much more beautiful.
