Max: There are two factors in shooting hummingbirds. Available lighting and auxiliary flash lighting. The flash pulses are of very short duration, possibly on the order of 1/4000 second and that is what the part of the bird facing the camera is lit with. The 1/250 second is the shutter speed but the light speed pulse is much faster.

James: After two summers and several hundred frames I began to learn what it took to capture these tiny creatures. I now use on-camera flash with a battery pack and a slaved fill-flash from the direction the bird is facing. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough of them this last summer to work with. If there are less than 25-30 birds they worry too much about me and stay away. If they are numerous, they pay very little attention to humans. Come up to Summit County and photograph with us next summer. We've found a place in Heeney that always has hundreds of the them from early July until September. We get four species: Rufous, Broadtail, Black Chinned, and Calliope. The Rufous are by far the most numerous but we usually get a few of the others.

Daniel: Thanks for the comments. Hummingbirds aren't much larger than the insects in your shots. I don't need an extension tube for focus but I do use the teleconverter to make them bigger.

Aaron: Not to put too fine a point on it but it's a she. The males are mostly cinnamon in color with a brilliant red gorget at the throat. Their feet are pretty much useless for anything but perching. They have to fly everywhere, no walking. I wish I could do that! Thanks for the comments, I do appreciate them. Keep shooting.

The moment of exposure was made at the right time. This is the best photograph of a hummingbird that I have ever seen. This is top notch work. It's like it was made to order. I didn't know the hens were colorful. Usually it's the males.

Fred, being a nature lover I really LOVE this picture. The slight movement of the wings make this a special photo - more natural than should you have frozen the wings. The focus of the rest of the bird is just perfect. I just wonder how you get so close even with the 420mm?

Aden: Thank you for the suggestion. I had blurred the background somewhat before I posted the image. The noise results from having to use ISO 400 to capture these fast-moving birds. I'm hoping to remedy some of the noise by buying better equipment. I'm told that throwing money at a problem makes it go away. Somehow this approach hasn't always worked in the past but I am ever hopeful. Nonetheless, thanks again.

It is well beyond my ability to take such a picture so I must refrain from critique. I will suggest however that you use PS smart blur in the red and blue channels to elimidate some of the noise in the back ground.There will be plenty of detail left in the green channel to avoid any obvious posterization effect.
