About This chap was sheltering from the wind at the top of the Rock. He didn’t seem at all concerned about having a lens stuck in his face (nor about the monkeys fighting at my feet...)

This is the first upload using a revised workflow with sharpening as the last step (thanks Doyle and Chris) - and yes, it does make a difference!

My main concern here is the crop - does the bit of beak blur add an abstract dimension to the composition, or does it detract from it and should be removed?

Hi James! It was not a very long discussion, but here's the link:

http://www.usefilm.com/Photo_Forum/17/1013408/

Having since read more about this issue, it seems to be universally agreed that sharpening should come at the end, after resizing. This is a pain in the whatsits as it means you have to rework the final steps of post-processing separately for each location in which you want to use the image. But I now always do this and it can make a noticeable difference.

hi aj. i just managed to get myself a D200, and am trying to learn more about the post processing process (want to maximize my chances of better photos with this very nice camera).

regarding your comment about sharpening as a last step, which forum was that being discussed in? i'd like to find it. not sure why sharpening needs to be last. in fact, i've always sharpened as my penultimate step, before resizing, but would like to see the entire discussion as it happened if you could point out where i can find it.

thanks. james

Many thanks, James. This is actually just a common seagull - imagine the beak off to the right of the image...

The revised workflow relates to a previous forum discussion about processing raw images. Both Doyle and Chris emphasised the importance of sharpening as a last step, after resizing. It's a little annoying as it means it has to be done each time an image is sized for a particular location, but it does make a difference.

Excellent work AJ, and as noted its razor sharp. What type of bird is this? Never seen the likes that face before.

Would you be good enough to explain the revised workflow you mention in the "About" up above?

Take care ~ James

Hi AJ,

I agree with Doyle - crop out the beak and leave the eye as the focal point. Wonderful color and sharpness, this is a great image.

Excellent I think that the bit of beak blur adds an abstract dimension to the composition 'Perfectly'...... I think it adds and definitely does not detract from this image - 7++++++++++

Best wishes,
Michele~

Hi Sally: I do have various tighter crops, but considered that the shape of the feathers around the eye was an integral part of the image and so preferred this version. Hadn't spotted the orange fringe, though!

I like the beaky bit - I'd be tempted to turn the orangey fringe on the top of the red bit, red too - then not only would it not look like blur - it would look bolder and purposely abstract, and perhaps crop in a little closer on the left so that the eye is nearer the third.
That's one scary close-up. Beautifully sharp.

Art: yes it did occur to me! Funny how that bit of beak looks like a mouth, and then the perspective changes...

I may have the answer to your macro switch problem! You need to point the camera at something distant and refocus before you switch back from macro to normal mode.

keep the blury beak & do a mirror stich on the right vertical, what a face, maybe, tehe,. excellent close up work aj, can't fault it, brill,. aj, have you encountered any probs with the switch- machro to normal- on that lens, i find it a bit tempremental & does not always function 1st time,. regards art,.

Excellent details on the feathers and the eye is pin sharp. Personally I think I like it better without the red line but that's just me.:)

Would've never believed that it was a real shot had you not written it! I think it works very well the way you've presented it. Oh...what a look. Tho' u say it didn't seem bothered by ur lens, I can see in it's eye that it was on the verge of breaking its vow to its mother to be good to strangers! :) Nice one dear AJ

Very strong image!!! Personally, I would have left off the beak because I try and keep things as simple as possible, but I think it also works fine as it is.

AJ -- This is amazing; the impact is exceptional. I think the beak blur adds a color component that gives this more balance and was the right decision. 7 to the Power of 2!
PS: I always leave my sharpening to the end because resizing and other adjustments can work against sharpening so best to leave it to the final stage.
--Best to you, Jan

Hell of a lens. I'm ok with the fuzzy frown. De-emphasizes it and keeps the focus on the eye. Was that a product of your DoF?

Sharpening as the last step? Hmmm... I'll have to try sharpening something. Hehe.

Very impressive shot all around.

AJ Miller AJ Miller   {K:49168} 6/8/2007
Many thanks, Pete. Actually, the lens is not a true macro, but a 70-300 zoom with a close-up capability. In macro mode the closest you can get is 95cm - needs a fast shutter and/or steady hand! For true macro work I think a 105mm would be far superior...

Not at all, I really like it. I think it adds to the composition nicely, draws the viewer into the shot focusing on the eye. Great contrast too.

Really nice image!

I've been thinking for sometime about getting a macro, how close did you have to get in order to take this shot?

No, I think the line a the bottom certainly adds an abstract element to this image that makes it stronger!

it's a good question and i do not have an answer; i really like as it's, the crispy eye is very hypnotic and the blurred beak does not bother me; It works wonderfully as an abstract as well; love it
