Awesome shot Marcus,
I really enjoy this type of behavioral shots. They say so much about the ecology and behavior of this powerful kind of raptors. Pictures like these are very difficult to get. Raptors not always catch their prey when photographers are around and when they do, they usually take their prize to a secluded spot away from us and other potential predators.
You really got lucky with one of those "cooperative R-tH" and you took full advantage of this incredible opportunity.
If somebody finds this image offensive, my only comment will be, welcome to the real world. This is the way nature behaves. Life and death are part of the same intricate cycle.

Congratulations for taking this exceptional shot and keep them coming.
Take care buddy.

Thank you so much Marcus for taking the critique in the way it was intended, such a refreshing change not to have my head bitten off for pointing something out! I’m pleased to hear it’s not the dreaded dirt on the sensor, now I know who to ask for advice if I need to clean mine… LOL!

Meg.

Thanks Met wonderful nice comment/critique, Gayle and yourself are correct, I posted this shot in a Challenge on another site, and after the feedback I decided to remove the flying guts and never cloned over the discolored patch. the two spots are actually bits of mouse..
Dont ever say sensor spots LOL, I get paid to clean sensors, bad for business LOL...
Take Care...

Thanks doyle, I agree and find it a real shame, Today I had the shot of a lifetime will explain details later, and my camera decided to take a dump and all photos from then on look completly blown or really dark Frek........
I am waiting for your shot to hit the front page should draw some pretty good attention...

I don’t find this image offensive at all Marcus, it’s just a reflection of life and death is very much a part of that… But then I’m married to a butcher, I can never understand why people are so horrified and create such a fuss when they see the loaded wagon go into the abattoir but they will quite happily and without thought sit down to a meal including meat. Nature is beautiful but also ruthless, even in death there is also a strange beauty...... this may portray it graphically but it’s wonderfully done!

I also see the same as Gayle, there is a square on the blue sky just by the side of the mouse, it looks as if it could be an embedded watermark or it could even be where you have cloned something out.
There are also two dark specks, one either side of the leg and just above the wood; these could possibly be dirt on your sensor.

That's him!! Amazing . . . I assumed you wouldn't know but shots like these last forever . . . like the burned baby at the train station.......and they DO prompt action. Poor Kevin fought many demons for this . . . but helped many too. Some photos you just CAN'T forget.

Doyle I <~~~~~

Marcus -- this is a wonderful image -- very real. It's wrong to anthropomorphize nature (I learned that in the National Park Service -- but I had to look up the word the first time I read it). Thanks for posting the photo and provoking a really stimulating and interesting exchange.

Hi Elisa thanks for the comment, you dont have to wonder, That was a leg of the mouse that flew off, I decided last second to crop it out and forgot to blend the sky...
Thanks again..

Hi Marcus! Great double capture. We all have to eat, indeed, and it´s interesting to see what the most delicious parts are :) I see a tiny brighter blue square on the left of the mouse ... wonder what that is/was?

I guess table manners don't apply here. Ok, definitely offensive. You should see my lunch shot - very clean, no blood and gore involved. And yes, great shot! So when's lunch?

Thanks Doyle, The sun was angled down right behind my head above the bird as you suspected, I think the reason the leg got the hot spot was the soft feathers seem to reflect light more, therefore the bright leg. I find it really amazing that you spoke of that Pulitzer prize winning photo as I have the original newspaper clipping and photo on my wall..
That photo had such an impact on me I would just stare at it for hours..
I guess you do know the photographer Kevin Carter Commited suicide shortly after...

I have had strange situations where I wondered if I made the right decision. One time a very aggressive coyote was taking down a Doe, she had two young ones, I was taking photos and decided to run down and scared the coyote away which had her pinned down, he ran off and soon after she jumped up and ran off with the little ones????

Another time I was watching a golden eagle perched with his hunting eye out, a young girl was playing with her cat at a near open lot, I saw right away that he noticed the cat, and took flight, i followed quickly around 50 yards away with the little girl screeming and the eagle trying to make the kill, I actually knocked him off with my lens, This i feel justified about.
There are many simular photos that I dont post due to the flack I have recieved, and I do find there is a fine line in what is exceptable and what is just plain gross to viewers...

Kevin Carter (1961-1994) - South Africa Pulitzer Prize winner, Kevin Carter, took his own life months after winning the Pulitzer Prize for feature photography for a haunting Sudan famine picture. A free-lance photographer for Reuter and Sygma Photo NY and former PixEditor of the Mail&Gaurdian, Kevin dedicated his carrer to covering the ongoing conflict in his native South Africa. He was highly honoured by the prestigious Ilford Photo Press Awards on several occasions including News Picture of the Year 1993. Kevin is survived by a seven year old daughter, Megan.

I can't imagine reality being offensive . . . uhhhhh . . . yeah, now that I think about it . . . I guess it's not really a surprise. I'm reminded of the Pulitzer Prize photo of a starving child crawling towards food with a vulture following. Many said he should have helped . . . not photographed the image. Still . . . the photo brought worldwide attention and help to the problem.

Here it's not so serious an issue . . . though you may never get to be a Mouseketeer now. LoL! One of the two MUST die . . . nature has chosen. No moral issues. Now if you wanted a fuss get a schreech owl carrying away a pekingnese puppy . . . THAT would be trouble!

CC image so I HAVE to ask . . . the light seems strong from the lower right causing a tad bit of lower leg overexposure. While it doesn't bother me . . . I find it intriguing . . . since the shadows under this bird seem to indicate a higher sun. Reflection perhaps?

Anyway . . . another winning image!!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Great in all aspects Marcus, excellent photography, that poor lil mouse...:( Hahaha.

I'm not gonna tell you that the light is perfect with nice details and exposure..(mostly), and that the clarity and composition are perfect as they always are, or that the complementary colors are beautiful, or that this is great work...because I always tell you that and I'm not gonna do it again!!! Next time I just say "DITTO" ok? LOL...well done...:)Linda

Another super action bird shot. I don't find it offensive, rather a capture of nature the way it is. Can't find much to critique either. You certainly have to be the King of BIF shots, so many, so great, and you are really fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to get those type of shots. I know how hard BIFs are. The 400 DO seems to agree with you. Can't wait till you get the new MK3. Do you think the slight loss of FL will affect your shots? I don't, its probably not enough to worry about. FF though, might be a disadvantage for bird shooting. Good luck, I hear there has been a delay with the release of the MK3 until April, I wonder if they found something minor to tweak.

Possibly another candidate for NG, if there's still time?? It's raw (excuse the pun). The over-exposure can be fixed with a little photoshop burning, if necessary.

The gore is a bit difficult to look at, naturally, but offensive? No, not at all. That's nature. That's how these creatures survive.

Wow, great detail there, Marcus! A little gory, but that's nature, right? It's really a remarkable shot, a scene that most of us will never see, except in photographs like this. Thanks for sharing.

Marcus,

You realize, of course, that you are making it almost impossible for anyone else to get any attention for their nature shots. How are we supposed to top that? Excellent capture, Marcus. I will comment that his left leg looks a bit over-exposed, since this is critiquers corner.

I don't find this photo nearly as offensive as having to watch some fat slob wolf down a cheeseburger at McDonald's.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Todd
