Thanks Lisa . . . I appreciate that and it took a couple of comments here at UF before I became instinctively aware of the horizon line! Your software can help overcome any problems you may have but a rotation may cause an unwanted crop to become necessary. This image was a bit to soft for me but the comments made it easy for me to fix before I got it printed and the matted, framed print hangs on my wall to this day. A great and pleasing shot made better by the critiques!

Horizon line is perfect - something I always have a problem with in my images with any body of ocean.

Great composition with the rocky bluffs of Palos Verdes and the lighthouse.

Great moody sky.

Thanks Lori:
We have been going here for a long time. Before I got into photography, we used to come to watch the whales pass . . . a beautiful spot.

I've been here, but it's been a long time!

This is an awesome composition, Doyle! Everything is just RIGHT! And I love the corner with yellow flowers, really adds a lot!

Very nice work,
Lori :)

A really lovely scene, Doyle. I agree with others that the lack of sharpness is a distraction. The sky and sea are gorgeous. What I think could be done to improve the photo is to include more sea on the left. It is, after all, a photo of an object that is designed to project light a great distance in all directions, not just directly out to sea. Including more sea would tell more of a story.
The lack of focus in the flowers is a slight distraction. The black pole accurately reflects the scene. As such it doesn't bother me that much. There is something on the hill above the black pole that may be a plant, but looks for all the world like a piece of dirt. I think cloning that out would be useful.
This one is well worth working on, even if you have to go back and reshoot it. Getting the same clouds might be a problem, though. :>)
Kind regards,
Steve

Hmmm... so it's not lens shake at 1/1250th at 70mm.

1/1250th makes me wonder if it was underexposed at all, or if all the 'Auto' settings were chekced in ACR.

Again, it may be the resize. I like to resize my images in exact multiples of 1/2 or 1/4. (You do this by going to Image>Image Size>Percent>25) This preserves the bitmap grid of the original image...and it really does make a big difference. Have a look through some of my landscape images, almsot all of them were resized in that method.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris: I've added the settings used . . . 1/1250sec at f/4.5, ISO 200, 70mm focal length, tripod used. Original is much clearer.

Hey Doyle, thanks for the reply.

Again, so much if this is subjective, so beyond some of the basic issues such as sharpness, it could go either way based on tastes.

As for the RAW conversion, did you have to push the exposure or brightness when opening in ACR? This can sometimes result in loss of detail. Also, using the given lens at the tele end at a slower shutter handheld could be the problem.

Also, my workflow goes Camera RAW > Pshop CS2 ACR > Save as TIFF > Save as JPG for Web upload. I find this works the best for doing multiple edits on the files as TIFFs, and then saving only once as a jpg for web upload.

Tiffs are much larger files, but hard drive sapce is inexpensive enough now that you can have a terabyte (1000GB) for under $400.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris for the detailed and well thought out comments/critiques. I agree - naturally - that the overall image is a bit soft. I THINK (but will find out for certain) that the softness came into these latest postings due to the addition of two new tools . . . the 300mm lens and the PS Elements 4 program. Now, using RAW files, I have more options and worked the image properly BUT saved as JPEG before resizing not once but possibly three times. Loss of data would likely have come from that. I would have responded sooner, but without the original (I'm at work) I have no access to shutter, focal length - aperture info. Clearly I'll check into that when I have time but I'm on a deadline with homework too. The flowers were a personal choice . . . I placed them there intentionally because I felt they added to the image. I framed the scene as the usual landscape with a deep DOF, but changed it to blur the flowers so, you're right, I could have focused both . . . but the flowers IN focus were a distraction (in my opinion). I agree with the horizon issue - just didn't think of it at the time. Can't get closer to the Coast Guard Facility really . . . it's fenced pretty good and (as you know) has cliffs. My intention here was to show the setting . . . the lighthouse study without the cliffs was to show the lighthouse.
Thanks for the time to make this well thought out comment - you have given me a lot to think about and (I believe) the lighthouse will still be there later for another round!

Thanks for the E-Mail Hugo . . . I'll have to check into a number of the points when I have more time. The original is considerably sharper and I use PS Elements 4 so those masks should work . . . but I did pull from raw to Jpeg before resizing (more than once) to get to the upload limit and I'll bet that's what the issue is. Thanks for all the help.

Very rugged looking area. The composition is good, colors and lighting are excellent. There is a light house on Lake Conroe (very close to where I live now. All I have to do is figure out how to get close enough for a photo! lol

Hi Doyle, again this looks a tad soft, any idea what happened? Well composed shot, and a very nice scene.

Cheers,

Hugo

I think overall the image seems abit soft, which may or may not be due to the resize/upload.

I find the flowers out of the DOF in the right foreground to be a distraction, either zooming in abit more, or increasing the DOF could have helped.

And remember there is more DOF behind the point of focus than in front of it, so by focusing on the flowers and maxing out the DOF, you could probably get the whole scene in focus from front to back.

Also, the horizon line is directly centered in the middle of the photo, which you typically wouldn't want to do, and I think in this case makes the photo look static.

On an overall conceptual level, I think the focus of the photos lies on the coast and cliffs itself, and not so much the lighthouse, mainly because a good portion of the house is out of view, and visually the dominance lies with the rocks and sky as opposed to the lighthouse buildings. I wonder if you could have gotten any closer to the lighthouse?

On a minor level, the black pole extending from the middle right is a distraction as well as grayish box/building to the middle bottom left.

Regrads,
Chris
