He is becoming a very good macro photographer and I think he would love to see this image. I wouldn't think of sending this without your consent though. I'm not sure if a nonmember can see this if I just sent the link but if that is the case I would still like to have your blessing before hand.

Hi Eb - ThePanagor converter is old technology with no electronic couplings - I loose all auto control, including metering. Not so bad since after a while its intuitive and the LCD always gives a reference to adjust to.

This is absolutely amazing, Joggie. One of the most impressive macros I've seen. It was a lucky capture, but you made the most of it. Great composition, colors and clarity.

Joggie, when you say everything is manual, does that include the necessity to stop down to meter accurately, or can you meter at wide open?

Joggie, I know how you can do it - but it would appear to be an unintended consequence. You can exceed the 1/500 sync if you tape one or more of the contacts on the flash shoe. I don't know which ones, but the camera does then not recognize the flash as dedicated Nikon. The same would happen if you use any non-dedicated flash.

Hi Eb - I have an old Vivitar Auto 2600 and a Hanimax Pro550 flashlights - I tested it with both and for example with the Hanimax I shot all the way up to 1/8000sec on manual settings. I could not believe it myself and actually shaked the camera violently while releasing the shutter and still got pin sharp images - really dont know why you can't do it, checked agin right now - Perhaps someone else has the answer?

Still don't know how you can exceed the shutter sync speed. Some of Nikon's flash supports FB -high speed sync. but this is not compatible with the D70. It seems as if you are able to do marvelous things with your camera! I can understand how you get to f45. Your lens design includes an internal "extension tube" which reduces the amount of light and hence effective f stop at macro distances.

Me again Eb - I forgot to mention, with my flash and macro setup, everything is on full manual (the lense focus, metering, flash sync etc. - Thanks Nikon for the LCD!) - so one can push it up or down as you like.

Thanks Eb - the actual shutter speed was 1/800th/sec - had to choose the closest on the list. That said, I have taken other shots at even higher speeds (lighter background and subject). My ringflash is quite powerful and I find it very handy to reduce camera shake.
I am not sure how it works but I also have pushed the fstop to f45 even while the lense only goes to F32 - and yes it does make a difference in the actual exposure!

Joggie, this is amazing - and I knew it was amusing, even in the thumbnail! It looks better than something out of a Star Wars animation. Africa has such a variety of creatures - your good fortune to live there, leaves me with some envy! I am also puzzled about how you managed to push your strobe beyond the 1/500 sync.
