About After shooting many redtail hawks and feeling as though I needed a change I went to find a red shoulder, It is a much different hawk to shoot. They are less Trusting of humans and will fly at the first sight of one, and they dont come back so you get only a couple of shots should you see one.
I saw this one perched in a tree and as soon as he saw me he was gone Into the trees...

This is wonderful, Marcus. Your good friend Larry Fosse said I should look at your portfolio and I'm very glad I did. Very impressive. I like shooting birds, (photographically of course), also, but mine are much easier to find, and also not so timid. Cheers, Ann.

I agree about the blinds.. but some places have permanent blinds, I am guessing they would work better since they are always there...good luck and keep shooting these great shots

Thanks Paul, I have been through the Blind thing a few times, I find that the birds that know the area and see a object that was not there earlier stay clear. I think much has to do with were you shoot, a area which I along with yamil frequent is populated by the same birds for the most part and they notice anything out of place, I think in places where you are trying to catch the bird passing through hunting, they are more effective as they dont know the terrian as well.

Thanks Steve, To answer your question, Its great in most situations and bad in some. The 400mm DO Is a great lens that is much sharper then my 100-400L or my brothers 400mm 5.6, but I often find myself too close to my subject and wish I had the zoom, It is also a few ounces more then the zoom, other then that the f/4 which allows me to use the 1.4X Is great, but I would NOT pay the 5200.00 they are asking for it here. I got this store demo from my friends Camera shop, for 2000.00

great bird capture as always!... do you ever try using portable photography blinds.. they can help some.. but birds are smart and watch you and remember that you go into the blinds in the first place. I saw this tip and thought it was interesting "Being cautious creatures, the birds will flee as they spy you going into it. You'll have to wait a bit for them to forget your presence or for other birds to move into the area, foraging for food. I've heard of a trick: get a friend to go with you to the blind. After a minute or two, have the friend leave and go home. The birds, or at least some of them, will assume that the blind is empty." anyway...again, great capture...

Unbelievable. You're just too good, my friend. How do you find the 400 prime over the 100-400 in terms of performance? I assume you got it at some horribly low price over there in the US? About £4000 here in the UK... Ouch!
Regards, Steve.

This is the most colorful hawk I've ever seen. I like having the tree in the background btw. These are extraordinarily difficult shots, not to mention finding a hawk.

This is really nice Marcus. I like the tree in the b/g...it really sets hinm off nicely. Nice quick trigger finger too!

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 11/8/2005
I wondered about the distracting trees too when I saw the thumbnail, but about tells the story. I think you were right to leave them in as they are part of the story of the hawk escaping into the trees. Perhaps some of the branches around the head could have been removed as a compromise, but I think the details and exposure of the head are excellent and it isn't really necessary.

I bet you were happy to see this one! So cool to go looking and find what you're looking for, and then to get the shot. Well captured Marcus! Wonderful details and a beautiful wingspan, he looks determined! I like the complementary colors and the composition, very nicely taken and presented! Linda

Wild China   {K:4} 11/7/2005
Probably would have been less distracting at the back rather than behind the face thats all.
Cant really do much about it in most cases.
I wouldnt go so far as to retouch out the back tho.
Cheers

Thanks David I was just telling David Hofmann that i could have removed the trees completly but thought it added somthing to the shot, maybe not? :)

Thanks David, I actuall could have removed the background but I though it added a bit more then the typical blue sky, I could have been wrong :)

As usual great shot Marcus.
Nice colors and dof.
I have seen only a couple of these elusive hawks in Rancho San Antonio.
But like you said, they do not tolerate humans.
You were right, they are very pretty.
Congratulations for this awesome shot.

Beautiful once again Marcus!
He looks so pissed off at you. As far as your "about" is concerned, I think if the challenge was not there, then the images would mean much less to you.
I could probably go and shoot Canada Geese all day long from close up, but I never do :) Come to think of it, they would be good to practice on.
