About Subject Background: A skyscraper in San Francisco, no idea where exactly. Lego-style again.
http://www.usefilm.com/image/503453.html

Photoshop concept: Conversion to BW. Mild Crop to get rid of some reflections. changed the sky to a darker tone to get a better contrast to the building. worked on the overexposed part on the right. increased middle tone contrast to get better textures.

As always: Honest feedback highly appreciated.

your portfolio is really impressive. There is so much it will take me a while to really look though it. You not only have an excelent eye for the worl around you but have your own look that I like very much. This photo reminds of the movie "Skycapain and the world of tomorrow". It sure was a comic stip on film but the look of that movie is just awesome and your work sometimes reminds me of that.

es macht auf mich den Eindruck als ob es eine auf das Minimum reduzierte Tuschezeichnung wäre...

Ich war schon immer ein Freund von Tusche :)

This is just remarkable Thilo.
The composition is just superb and a fabulous contrast.
I love the title - very corny indeed ;-)
The lighting on the building is wonderful, an excellent time to capture this.

Best wishes,
Steve

Hi Uwe,

ja, um ehrlich zu sein, schiebe ich dieses bild schon länger vor mir her, und deine bilder haben mich wieder daran erinnert. dir gebührt also durchaus die ehre, als motivator für dieses bild zu fungieren.
thx fürs feedback,

Hi Stefan,

sorry for the mess. You're right about the focal length. I'm used to my new D70 where the focal length is projected to 35mm automatically. So I was tricked with the 39mm. this IS the maximal focal length the pentax has and it corresponds to 190mm on 35mm cameras.

I changed the geometry a bit to give the image a more vertical look. please find enclosed the original picture.

will answer your mail when our mail server is up again ;-)

I can sum it up in two words, Thilo.....Powerful and Dramatic! Bravo. ..Brad

I assume that the 39 mm is the actual focal length of your Optio which should correspond to nearly 200 mm in 35 mm camera terms? I would think that there is very little distorsion at what must be max zoom for your camera.

Hi Stefan,

thanks for the in-depth analysis. To be honest, the focal length was just 39mm, and I did just a mild rework in the geometry. I you wish, I may upload the original one.
I think this image features some tricks for the eyes. The longer I look at it, the more imperfect it seems - although you give us the proof, that the verticals are just fine.
anyway, great to have such UF friends like you. always a pleasure to read your elaborate comments.
take care,
thilo

Stefan Engström   {K:24473} 9/13/2004
I assume that you must have shot this with a pretty long focal length so it is not lens distorsion I see (confirmed by the perfect alignment of the vertical lines in the image).

Super shot Thilo! Great light play and the choice to darken the sky is certainly part of the success of this image. There is some curious geometrical illusion going on here: it looks to me as if the building is growing relatively wider (for the same size element) at the top, creating a boquet-like effect. Weird but I like it.

I think it's a really great work, very good perspective and impresive building!
