About Shot in RAW format in partly cloudy late afternoon light on a covered porch. Used zebra reflector to boost light.

Actual info: ISO 100, f2.8 @ 1/90.

PS used to correct for color and contrast, one bit of cloning to correct a blemish. One-pixel border added just because I could :)

The most interesting perspective on a rose I've seen in a long time, Mary Sue - stunning result -exquisite colours - please fill me in: what do you mean by "one-pixel border added" ? I asume it has something to do with PS, but I have no experience of that program at all, and adding borders sounds like something one should be able to do ;-) Regards

Congratulations on the awards, each and every one of them is well earned! Great shot, and unusual way to see it, many would be tempted to shot it differently, more conventionally, I'd say. Well done! Keep up the good work, as rest of your work is impressive too!

This is simply short of amazing. Usually the largest possible DOF is preferable when taking macro shots. The tiny DOF is spot on for this composition. The color and saturation could not have been better.

Dear Mary Sue,
Great technique. I've seen you use it a few times to pick out one element for a flower & let the rest dissolve in the background. I have got to try this myself.
Thanks for sharing,

Roger Williams Roger Williams   {K:86139} 8/26/2004
It took me a moment to work out just what this macro shows--the colour was what hooked me and made me want to know! Just goes to show that macros don't have to be all crystal clear with razor-sharp focus... the focus is just sharp enough where it needs to be, and delightfully soft and smooth elsewhere. The overall effect is just gorgeous. I have to have this among my favourites, Mary Sue!

It pays to break macro rules sometimes and this is a great example of that. The colors are snappy and the focus really makes this one work!

Thanks to everyone for their kind remarks and especially to the SC elf!

Jim, the zebra reflector is one of those round reflectors that have a zigzag pattern of silver and gold on one side. It provides a slightly warm cast to the reflected light.

I saw this on a different monitor than my own, and it nearly burned my retinas out. I don't know if it is my color calibration (a laptop) or the other monitor (a flat screen), but on my monitor the image color matches the actual flower. I'll look at it on a CRT tomorrow and see if there is a difference there as well.

Thanks again for the comments.
