About This male Elephant Seal was letting the other males around know that he is boss. The pink rough area on his chest and neck are scars as a result of combat during mating. To signal his challenge to other males, he throws his head back and makes an audible noise that sounds like someone trying to keck-start a hard starting Harly motorcycle. The males can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and their nose has a large flap that can measure as long as 6-8 inches. This is where it gets its name because someone thought it looked like elephant's trunk.
