About
People board the 136 foot Gaff topsail schooner “Bill of Rights” in front of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s Rubber Duck at the 2014 Tall Ships Festival in San Pedro California. The Bill of Rights is another ship that provides youth development, educational, and sailing programs for students. Built in 1971 in Maine, she came to the west coast in the late 1980’s. More than 10,000 students have been part of her award winning sailing program in the past 6 years. The yacht-size inflatable duck measures 85 by 66 by 105 feet and weighs more than 1,300 pounds. The Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman launched the project in 2007 as a way to bring joy to the world via a universally friendly image. The duck has appeared in Australia, Taiwan, China, Belgium, Japan, New Zealand, Brazil and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. There was also a 10 foot baby rubber duck at the festival.
