About Walking to the area where I typically shoot small shorebirds, I noticed this Pelican just sitting looking as moody as I did due to the weather! Once he noticed me he took off, but i got a couple of shots off.....

Marcus, I've just taken another look at this image. The first time round, I did not fully appreciate the clarity of detail and the great composition you achieved in this image.

It takes me back to a recent visit to a town called The Entrance, in NSW, Australia. Every afternoon, at around 3.00pm, a group of volunteers feed the Pelicans. I took more than 300 photos in the hour that we were there watching the event. A lot of the time, the birds were no more than a few metres or yards away. At no time, did I achieve an image a quarter as good as this one! Of course, you, no doubt, have far better equipment than I do, however, that, as many photographers will admit, is only one of the components in aiding the capture of a near perfect image. An image also needs to contain some, if not, a lot, of ‘wow’ factor! This one does contain a good serve of that!

You were obviously there at the right moment in time. You managed to capture that moment with some wonderful included detail, without background distractions, and, at the same time, you positioned the bird to be perfectly placed in the scene. IMHO, that is the difference between a photographer who can capture a nice bird image, and a photographer who can capture a near perfect shot!

I, particularly, notice that there isn’t any noise under the wings, and that there isn’t a halo surrounding the bird, both, of which, I believe, are important in helping to achieve a near perfect bird image!

Congratulations on your awards! They are well-deserved!

Well done, again, Master! You are a real asset to the UF site!

Cheers

Phil

Great shot of him while he was there, Marcus! I like the way you got him with his wings partially lifted, just as if he was thinking of making his move. Another very nice wildlife shot!
Dave.
