Well, in full pano mode this is a BIG picture!
I find it striking for its tonal range. I especially like the contrasting crops on either side of the road and the way the road leads off into the distance. I also like the way you are just off-centre in the road, although I might have gone perhaps even a little further toward the right.
The stitching looks superb (you used Autostitch?). Being really picky, I notice one or two spots eg. just to the left of the top of the main part of the rainbow, and perhaps in front of the other end of the rainbow as well.
This is a superb image and looks great on the front page today!

Great capture Michael! Nothing like being on the "back side" of a Supercell Thunderstorm, commonly known as the Mesocyclone. You've done a great job of capturing the essence of the storm. The sack-like protrusions, caused by negative bouancy you've photographed are at very high levels of the atmosphere, where the jet stream is... They form on the rear Anvil of the Supercell. The Mesocyclone as part of the Supercell Thunderstorm actually rotates, and you've captured this in your photo, by the curvature of the Mammatus... These are the storms that can produce huge Hail, and Tornadoes; Bravo on your capture, and being in the "safe-zone" when you did it.

BTW - the left side drop on that rainbow is just a cherry on the dessert . . . the icing on the cake . . . that 'je ne sais quois' that really pulls in all the stops and moves this from great to Wow! NICE!

Thanks, Michael. I have it downloaded. now, I need to get out and take some shots that will lend themselves to stitching together--whether they are great or not--just for the practice. If this was done with Autostitch, that's a good enough reference for me.

Holy Nebraska farmland!!! Wow! That is an awesome pano! This is for sure my favorite of yours. The power in the sky, and the wicked contrast of the dark and light sky is *insane*!!!
I love the pop you did w/ the contrast to the clouds.. that added so much motion to the image, and adds just enough swirl to all of the straight lines. ..and that rainbow to cap it off. Dude.

I hear you. I should go in and apply levels selectively to the grass and corn. The print is also a bit dark and grainy. This will need some work but overall I think the comp is working.

Yup, dark they are. This is one of those strange areas where photoshop leads to style differences. I tend to slide the contrast to the darker side on a lot of my photographs, which some feel is too unnatural, and some think add more drama. It's always a hard call.
In this instance a contributing factor was I intentionally underexposed the shots so they appeared darker than usual. This was to give me better latitute on the sky, as a standard metering will tend to blow out the clouds.
I was thinking of nothing but the clouds and metered off of them. An interesting result was that it really popped the rainbow. So after this I think whenever I see a rainbow I'm going to always go for a mixture of exposures but be sure to shoot a few metered off of the sky to really get that brightness to come out.
I'm also too lazy to convert to standard RGB from the Adobe colorspace, so my photos look a little off when I post.
Thanks on the rainbow comment - I can tell you this was not skill but luck. When shooting with the 12 mm I never know what the final result is going to look like, but in this case the road and storm came together in a surprisingly nice composition.
It's kind of a lot of stuff to summarize when in real life I was really hauling in my car around the outskirts of the town to chase the storm as the last few minutes of sunset before the sun dipped below the horizon.
If you've read this far you should see the other end of the rainbow over a farm on the left side, just a little bit due to it being way out there in the distance.
A rainbow will appear to the opposite of the sun, so put the sun to your back and the rain in front to catch one.

Great pano. The lines of the road and fields really draw your eye into the photo and the amazing sky seems to help bring you back out to look at the whole image. And you couldnt have asked for a better placement of the rainbow. The only issue I see is that your dark areas may be a bit too dark.
