Hello Ursula,
It's an absolutely wonderful composition. The textured white wall is a beautiful canvas upon which you've put that little bit of green and that even smaller bit of red. The angle of the window and the arc of the drooping vine are such nice design elements.
The way you isolated this scene is so elegant and simple - it made my day to see such a beautiful image.
Best regards, SteveR

Wow, this is beautiful, Erik! What a great-looking kid, and what an expression. You caught it just perfectly, composed it perfectly - even the shallow DOF and the motion of the kids in the background adds to the impact of this image.

Many thanks to Kamran and the rest of you for your kind words!
I should have mentioned that except for "Levels" adjustment in Photoshop (I just set a part of the image that should be black to black and the rest fell in line) the image wasn't manipulated at all. The beauty early-morning reflection onto the water was there for the taking!

A masterpiece of perspective - everyone has taken a photo of a railway or subway platform to show the perspective, but your use of showing the legs and glossy shoes in the foreground is really unique and deals beautifully with what would otherwise be "empty" space in the image.

Hello Dear Kamran!
A beautiful abstract design you made from an everyday scene. I love the way you used the design element of the slanted bright lines against the texture of the floor and to counterbalance the dark areas!

Beautiful interplay of texture, shadow, and shape. The curve of the shadow, from upper left to lower right, really unifies the image. I especially like your 2nd version - the extra contrast helps all of the elements of the image come together.

Wow, very strong image! Great PJ, Mark.
As to the Katrina reaction, as of today (Sep 28th, 2005) we're learning that a lot of what we were told by "on-the-scene" CNN, Fox, MSNBC etc, as well as "eyewitnesses", was either grossly exagerated or just not true. I think it will take some time to piece together the real story - unfortunately, our 24-hour-a-day news cycle almost guarantees that a lot of hogwash gets "instantly" put out.

A wonderful photo, Leslie. Compositionally, I really like the undulating dragon against the perfectly linear stripes of the flag. Also, the highly detailed pattern on the dragon is a great contrast with the simplicity of the flag.
On a deeper level, as a refugee-immigrant to the United States, I find your image very touching. It is a love-poem to my adopted country.

May I suggest some lyrics of my own:
"All we are saying... is bring back Saddam!"
That's not the intent of the "Stop the War" advocates, of course, but when you play out the logic, that's what it boils down to in terms of choices.
"All the world over, I wish they could see, People in Iraq just gotta be free. Listen to me listen that's the way it should be, in Mesopotamia - people gotta be free!"

Gayle, you're getting more creative by the day! I think this is brilliant. I really like the way you "painted" this using the shadows. Also, the very, very white paint contrasts so well against the shadows. The sidelighting you used to bring out some texture in the wall keeps the image from seeming flat.

Gayle,
I find the tenor of some of the comments on both sides uncomfortable, but by the same token, very strong photos like yours will tend to make people uncomforatable - and indeed, that is often part of the point of images like these.
When you post images like this, you are bound to be both praised and damned - it just comes with the territory. In a sense, it's sort of a measure of your photos suceeding in conveying how you see things.
In principle, I agree with Sheldon - but I don't think Mother Cindy actually said "evil Jews are running the government" - I believe the actual quote is: "...my first born was murdered. Am I angry? Yes, he was killed for lies and for a PNAC [Project for a New American Century] Neo-Con agenda to benefit Israel. My son joined the Army to protect America, not Israel." What happened is that people like David Duke jumped on the Cindy Sheehan bandwagon, and that's where the actual "evil Jews" quotes are coming from.

Wow! Gayle, you really know what you're doing! This is real, honest-to-gosh photojournalism.
This is a very powerful photo - the symbolism of the guitar and the candle is compelling. Yes, your cropping is very strong- I think that isolating these 2 elements adds to the stregnth of the image - more so that if we were to see the faces of these people.
As far as tone, I think it would have been nice to have been more crisp, but overall, that is minor in comparison to the emotional impact.
Unfortunately, I believe that rallying "for peace" and singing Kum-ba-yah is the wrong approach when one is dealing with this:

I'm seeing your photos in reverse order as it's been a while since I've taken the time to sit down and slowly go through the photos on my Friends list.
I think you've really hit your stride in this series, and I admire your PJ skills even though I disagree with your conclusions.
BTW, I'm a lifelong Democrat, voted for McGovern, Clinton (twice) and Gore - just wanted to make my Lefty credentials clear.

Hi Gayle,
Although I strongly disagree with the sentiment, nevertheless I admire your eye for composition here and your timing, which brings across the strongly-held emotion in this image.
Heck, *I* certainly reacted to it emotionally! Actually, any mention of Mother Cindy will do it for me. I'm totally at a loss to understand how her story could have changed so much between last year and this year- and how she could think that the thugs who killed her son, as well as thousands of innocent Iraqi women, children, and elderly, could be "freedom fighters.")
BUT - in a democracy like ours, controversy is Kosher, and photography, since its earliest days, has been a vehicle for advancing points of view.
For another point of view on this issue, I recommend Michael Yon's independent reporting from Iraq at http://michaelyon.blogspot.com/ It takes some time to read some of his lengthier essays, but it's well worth it.

I love this composition of yours, Petal. I've never seen a door-pull/letter slot like this one. It has a lot of character.
I think it would be fun to see a "Dutch primer," from you, consisting of photos of various words you find in your photo-travels.
Your language is so interesting to me because I understand a little German and Yiddish. When I hear Dutch, I usually can't make out any words, because I don't know the rules of pronounciation, but when I see it written, it looks much more familiar to me!
