Hi Gene - Shana Tova!
"...Great shot-just one question- Why such a slow shutter speed? ..."
I had my Canon A620 digicam on aperture-priority and set to ISO 50 as ususal. I normally don't like to go over ISO 50 or 100, otherwise the noise gets noticable. So anyway, since the sun was pretty low in the western sky, 1/25 sec was what the camera selected for the f/4.5 lens opening. I had the lens zoomed out somewhat, and there could only have opened it up another 1/2-stop or so.

You've made a great image here - I love the feeling you put into it - also your sense of humor in the title and the historical artistic reference ;-)
Thank you for your kind words on my Inner Harbor photo!

Thanks, Gene!
Yes, the USCG Cutter Taney is now part of the Maritime Museum, just about two blocks from the lightship. There's also the WWII submarine Torsk - did you see that one?
I have a shot of the Taney at http://therosenblog.blogspot.com/2005/12/uscgc-taney.html

Dear Kamran,
This photo is equal to any that I have seen in National Geographic (in fact, they would be lucky to have it!)
Your amazing image pulls me into a warm relationship with the girls and makes me smile back to the one in the foreground.
The blue colors in her headscarf, the trim on the white house, and the blue in the sky are so attractive and unify the image.
I think that you are more than ready to submit your photos to any international publication or contest!

How did you make the "35 mm film" border around the image? I like the effect very much and would like to apply it to some of my photos.

Hello Dino,
This beautiful and tranquil image of yours "knocked my socks off" as we say in the U.S. (it's a good thing, very good actually - probably very funny when translated into Italian.. ha fatto cadere i miei calzini?? :-)
The horizontal bands of green are wonderful, and the placement of the person is just right.
Complimenti! SteveR

Hello Kamram! Beautiful composition (I see a "V" shape from the body positions of the two children, each one slightly slanted towards bottom center- very pleasing to the eye!) Also, the colorful clothing of the young girl and even the head of the young boy stand out so well against the neurtral of the water. Plus the young girl is so innocent and beautiful! She has such a nice smile, and the boy is enjoying himself too.
An amazing photo, my friend! I've added it to my "favorites".
I'm happy to be back after a "summer photo slump" - thank you for your always-encouraging comments!

Hi Jacob - Please let me add my praise for this one to the others who have commented - very well done! The way you framed it, with that very strond diagonal of the keyboard, creates a good composition. You captured the energy of the hands very well. I would definitely hang this one on my wall!
You have some really nice photos in your UF portfolio - I'm on vacation now and using a maddeningly-slow dial-up line, so I'll come back and visit the remainder once I get back home - looking forward to seeing your whole portfolio.
Thank you for your kind words on my photos!

Hello Dear Kamran!
I've been "out of the loop" for a few months, so I checked my "Friends" photos on Usefilm and here is one of the most beautiful photos I've ever seen!
She is a beautiful child, and you caught such a wonderful expression on her face. I also like the way that her face and her dress are very colorful and detailed and then contained in the almost monochrome and "un-detailed" water.
I've been noticing "negative space" lately in photographs and paintings, and the "negative space" formed by the water in the background in your photo is balanced and appealing
Best regards, SteveR

Chuck,
Thank you for this photo - it shows something that just doesn't get shown in the mainstream media. For every horrible, cowardly terrorist attack on innocent Iraqis, there are thousands of scenes like this that go under-reported.
Ironically, when I read Kambiz' posts, the very very first thing I thought of is the very photo that you posted - it shows Major Mark Beiger of the Fort Lewis Stryker brigade when they were deployed in Mosul, deparately trying to save the life of the little Iraqi girl, Farah, a victim of an "insurgent" (i.e. terrorist) attack. Sadly, she died in his arms.
Thanks to the amazing sacrifice of Major Beiger and thousands of US troops like him, the situation in Mosul is much improved since this photo. There is a long way to go, but there has been much progress and now a lot of hope for the Iraqis in Mosul.
The photo was taken by independent writer Michael Yon - I recommend his reports from Iraq to anyone who really wants to see what's going on - http://www.michaelyon-online.com/

Hello Kamran,
You have made a beautifully expressive image using only hands. I remember the amazing photo of the old man's hands that you did a month or so back - I think you have mastered this concept.
The beautiful curve of Mother's hands, even to her fingernails, is balanced by the curve of the wood
Excellent, my friend!

Hugo - thank you very much for your comprehensive and very constructive critique! I cloned out the lamp, and it is indeed a much better composition as a result. Also, I re-cropped the photo to leave as much as there was in the original image at lower right. Here is the revised photo - what do you think?
Thanks again,Hugo, and thanks also to my good Usefilm friends Kamran, Joao, and Walter for your kind comments and suggestions!

Well, it's a great picture in many ways. I like the way that you have all the design elements - the large Arabic script, the column of smaller script, the soldier, and the rifle - at the edges of the image, sort of making a frame. It's unusual, but very effective.
Also, as you can see from the various comments, your photo evokes a lot of emotion! As for me, there is humor in the common quest of soldiers to find some time for sleep, and serenity in a time and place of conflict.
My heartfelt thanks to you and your comrades for your service to our country!
As to the war itself, the fault lies not with Mr. Bush, but with Mr. Saddam and all others who create and maintain societies of fear.

I love this photo, Gene! and I see you have now made it your "profile photo"-excellent.
I've never visited B&H, but I've heard only great things about them. I'd love to go there and hang out for a while to listen to photo-talk in Yiddish!
Actually, now that I think about it, "pixel" sounds like a Yiddish word! The 'l ending is often a diminutive in Yiddish (think "Yentl", diminutive for "Yenta") And what could be more diminutive than a pixel?

Excellent, Gayle. Mrs. King was beautiful spiritually and physically as well. I was a little sad to remember just how young Dr. King was when he was taken from her, and from all of us - only 39! So she was tragically such a young widow and lived without her dear husband for 38 years.
