I have seen many self portraits, many "myselfs" here in UF Hakan, but only seldom with this dignity and sense for the detail at the same time! Most of the time they show me their white teeth in a sunshine smile, but here I see a human being - direct, sincere, just as it has to be. I see a thinking young man.
The technical details are great! In this case there is a subtle little bit of that "hazy" view that adds to the general mood without hiding too much of the fine details. It removes a bit of the possible maximum contrast but introduces a bit of unreal light which fits the atmosphere very well - especially considering the very strong separation to the background. And it also enhances the way the photographer perceives the world as something not really so easy to grasp.
I maximized the contrast on my attachment just for showing how more clarity would diminish atmosphere in this case.
A very expressive, strong portrait!
