Dear Burim

Thank you for your comment, unfortunately I don't understand Albanian at all. May be you can send the comment in english, or may be someone reads this comments and translates it for me. Thanks any way.

Hi Sven

Not that I would like to discuss too much the size of the Swiss army... Usefilm should be about taking pictures. But let's give the army discussion a shot. Switzerland has 480'000 soldiers which can be mobilized within 48 hours. A couple of years ago, the figure was 600'000. This is about the size of Iraqi army before the first invasion in the early nineties. It also corresponds to roughly 10% of the Swiss population. It is because the Swiss army is mandatory, and everyone has to serve regularly until about the age of 38. During these "active" years, the equipment is kept at home (including the assault rifle and live amunition!). This explains the large number of soliders. Regards. J.

Again an excellent picture. Great eye for shadows and patterns. I would have chosen a stronger contrast, making he dark parts completely black. Regards. J.

Thanks for your valuable input. I received a similar comment and gave a somewhat lenghty answer, you may read in the previous reply. J.

Thanks, Steve and also thanks, Tracey (previous comment) for your input. Indeed, the picture would need some cropping. I didn't do it because of a "stupid" personal reason: I never change the aspect ratio of a picture (except obviously if for professional purpose or if it is a collage like the "triple portrait" I put on usefilm). On one hand, this rule limits the creative freedom, on the other hand it creates a discipline when taking the picture. Most of my pictures on usefilm have not been cropped at all. On paperprint, it allows me to show the black border of the negs.

Cropping this picture, keeping its ratio, would only be possible on the right, and it would leave a unrecognizable triangle where the tablet lies.

Regarding your comments on lightning..... no excuse, you got it better. Thanks again for the input. J.

Thanks for your nice comment. I had a look at your excellent portfolio, and now I appreciate your remarks even more.
I've made a few observation regarding the few comments. First I am bad at writing comments... so it's fair that I don't receive too much. Then the little thumbnails favor images with large subjects, while complexe compositions with backgrounds lose impact. And third the majority of photographers on UF make color pics... so the b/w freaks are a little sidelined... especially when concentrating on journalism or street photography. Still, I like UF a lot and it is great source of inspiration. J.

Dear Alle Kahn, I am not sure how to answer your question. From a pure content point of view, the picture is a snapshot of a stand at the Book Fair 1991 in Frankfort. From a formal point of view, I just liked the perspective and visual impact of this huge classical painting the stand owner used to advertise his books. Regards Jurg.

Thanks for you kind remarks, and indeed I prefer your version with the darkened bottom. Now regarding the lack of comments to the picture: I observed that pics with complex composition or small details do not really look good on the small thumbnails.... and therefore no or little comments. On the other hand, the comments may be more qualified.... smile. J.

Nice pic, but I would have darkened the bright background and lightened up the kids. Would have given a little more equilibrium to the pic. J.

a funny pic, but it doesn't live up to the other pictures you made. it's too much of a snapshot, in my humble opinion. J

Thanks, George, for these kind words. I have to acknowledge though, that this shot owns as much to good fortune as to skills. It was actally the only good shot on this roll of film. Still, I feel honored by your compliments. Thanks again. J.
