I was suggesting 'lighting it directly from the right'.

Excellent composition and perspective. I like the contrast and lighting. Great job... One suggestion... if you had used directly from the right, the shadows would appear more horizontal. Do try that. I don't have these babushka dolls to experiment.
Cheers...

Well the lighting was through a cloth (my white dress shirt) that was wrinkled and I had placed a red CD cover in front of the light. The product was on top of a ceramic tile that was black. Reflections were controlled by using a polarizer. I wear glasses and it was quite difficult to focus and the shallow DOF was intentional.
There is no post processing other than converting it in Nikon Capture and cropping for this site.

Beautiful composition and idea. If the background was a little darker, it would have really made the image strong. Nice work.

Beautiful capture with vibrant colour. The only thing I would point out is the wide pupils in her eyes. Other than that, its is brilliant.

Nice idea and great colours. I think the pupil is dilated a little too much. Maybe you were using only the modling light of the strobe. Excellent work.

Beautiful portrait. I like the skin tones and soft lighting. In my opinion, her right eye should not have been cut due to the pose. She has beautiful eyes and I would have captured both - complete.

Wow. I think you got the shot but he missed it. Maybe he was camera shy... ;-) Good work.

Now that I have my 170-500mm back, I will be joining you in the next endeavour.

Thanks for the nice comments. I am not sure of its origin; didn't have time to read the information. By the way, I captured this photo at our local zoo.

Thanks. Went through your gallery also. I must say I am impressed. Best of luck with you career in Child Psychology and when you graduate, do let me know how to make children sit for a nice, in-focus portrait... ;-)

Thanks. Kids are indeed awsome subjects but reallly hard to photograph. They keep on moving and having both in focus is only by chance.

Yep, in between us was the D2x and 80-200 Lens, and of course the wind screen of my car. And for more information, I was driving while I took this picture - one hand marvel.
