P.J., thank you for the advice. The square crop works much better.

Spotting interesting subject matter is the most fun part of photography for me. Most of my stuff is taken in either New Orleans or New York, though... and, let's face it, there's always something happening in either place. Thanks for the nice comments... they're always appreciated.

Excellent shot, Mary. I like the pairings of people very much (even the two people seen in the window on the far left) juxtaposed against the sole man's face in the foreground who's looking away. Well seen and captured.

Kareem:

Very nice image. I like the composition. Maybe I'm just partial to diagonal lines but the base of the wall across the lower quarter creates a diagonal line very much like I like to incorporate in many of my shots... either intentionally or simply by force of habit. It just looks good to me. The balance and tone of the photograph is nice too; and I like the man's attire and pose... with his legs crossed.

Knowing the histroy of the the man helps appreciate the photo more. This would be good shot to incorporate into a collection of pictures showing the effect that turmoil in the Middle East has had on people.

It may sound like a cliche' but it's an emotionally human shot. I don't know how else to describe it... but it's meant as a compliment.

Keep shooting and showing us your work.

Regards,

Dennis

Edward: I appreciate your kind comments. Thank you. I somehow managed to get the exposure right on this one, at least in getting the look I wanted. I used the in-camera for this although I still sometimes use an incident meter. I used to use an M3 as my main camera and always carried a hand held meter... sometimes reflective, sometimes incident. Oftentimes, however, I simply used the sunny 16 method which becomes fairly easy once you get accumstomed to it. As for filters I keep a Leica UV filter on my lens, mainly for protection as I don't like to use a lens cap. Thanks again.

Thanks, Kevin. Are you familiar with Robert Frank's shot from his book "The Americans" of people looking out from the windows of a streetcar in New Orleans? This shot was taken at what's known here in New Orleans as the "Street Car" barn, where the streetcars sleep at night. A Mardi Gras group known as the Phunny Forty Phellows kick off Mardi Gras season with their street car "parade".

Andreas, I admire your work, particularly the shots of the lovely Michelle. But if I might make one constructive comment... The makeup and lipstick detract from the photo. What I like about your shots of Michelle is that she is not a nineteen year old glamour model. She is a gorgeous woman and the strength of the shots is her natural beauty. Particularly in a natural outdoor setting such as in this shot the makeup and lipstick seem out of place. What makes these shots work is that they have a casually spontaneous look... as though you just happened to have a camera at hand. It takes away from the natural look of the photograph if Michelle appears to have gotten dolled up for the shot. Besides, she doesn't need the makeup and lipstick to look great. I hope my comments don't offend... Please keep sharing these wonderful shots.

The more I look at this photo the more I like it; it really is an excellent capture. The timing of the couples puckered lips is perfect; and, of course, the juxtaposition of the lonely fellow in the next booth, separated from the couple by a partition adds to the impression of two separate universes at play. The fact that the headlines on the man's newspaper appears to be spelling "SEX" adds a nice, clever touch. All in all, this is a wonderful example of street photography at its best; a well-composed, clever image that is a feast for the curious mind.

yes, michelle, i was a gladiator in a previous life. and if people don't like me taking their picture i just beat the crap out of them.

seriously... just relax and don't act like you're doing something you shouldn't be. be quick about it too and don't fiddle around with your camera. i preset exposure and pre-focus many times. that way taking someone's picture is not a great intrusion because it's over so quickly.

follow the nike slogan - just do it. the more yo do it, the braver you get. ;>)
