g'day Rina,
nice sharp image, unfortunate about lack of light on face, you should have taken image from other side

thanx for your interest Kevin

g'day Debarshi, maybe you should have thought about these issues of presentation at the time of taking the image
dof
diffusion
high iso
diffused light
composition to avoid bright objects in bgnd
etc
not everything is 'fixable' in ps

hi Mark, nice light, interesting image but too cluttered and not as sharp as f29 would suggest

g'day, I too think it a little noisy/grainy, also the composition is 'strained'

hi Matej, no I've not tried the reverse, I read of this technique in a magazine, of course I have not yet achieved the same results as the image published with the article as there many variables, paper type, exposure, contrast, amount of toning, amount of bleaching

Critique By: Ray Heath  (K:4559)

g'day Matej, good question, I'd not thought about it like that

I currently have work in a long term exhibition at a hospic, at the opening the well respected and greatly experienced photographer opening the show commented that my work was reminiscent of Henry Fox Talbot's earliest paper neg work, though my images were not of my paper neg series they did have a grainy old worldly aesthetic, anyway this prompted me to re-evaluate Talbot and I was surprised how artistic and interesting his images are, this reinforced for me the notion that the image is more important then how, or with what, it is created

having said all that, another consideration is that used differently any equipment can give a different/not the norm result, for example if I use RC paper and a very small aperture with this 'homemade' camera the resulting image is not unlike a print from my newer equipment, so why bother with the unusual if all I am creating is the usual
thanx for your interest

great image Sally, beautifully presented, I like that the lighting is a little different on each side
the next thing to try is creating one face from one side
your sister is a beautiful woman, great skin tone, a redhead perhaps?

hi Sally, great response, thank you
I did not mean for the details to make anyone feel 'ignorant'

they are what I do and know, just as you, and your work, are what you do and know

your portfolio contains wonderful images, regardless of the technique/equipment used, they have a basic and obvious intent, i.e. to create unique/interesting/beautiful/strong images

my latest images are a response and backlash to the contemporary desire for 'perfect' images

my image making had been too technical, but using these simple materials and equipment has made me re-evaluate and realise that good imaging is not about what you use but what you create

thanx
Ray

8/9/2005 12:38:08 AM

hey Brad, nice image but maybe a little too 'perfect'
I tend to agree with Roger, and perhaps the whole perfect lighting, pin sharp, vivid colour thing adds to the 'unnaturalness'

8/1/2005 7:22:48 AM

truly excellent natural portrait
so much for the idea that 'kit' lenses are less than optimum, it's what you do with it, not what ya got that counts
great range of tones

7/26/2005 1:54:28 PM

g'day George, thanx for the interest and appreciation
this image was captured with a simple lens using a multi holed disc as the aperture, that is the blurring is actually caused by lens aberrations

g'day Kevin, thanx for your interest
the exposure was made with three studio flashes with standard reflectors, main from left f4, fill from camera position f2 and one on b'gnd f11, due to the very slow speed of the paper, ISO 3, and maximum aperture of the 'camera', f3.5, this exposure was only just possible with one burst of flash

7/22/2005 12:37:22 AM

g'day Bryan, unfortunately Markus and Guido are both wrong and giving bad advise, sorry guys

the "blurrynes" is due to shallow depth of field due to the optical phenomenon that depth of field reduces as the focus distance reduces, that is, shallow DOF is a characteristic of close up imaging

the composition is excellent, a "larger crop", would not help, but a smaller aperture would

as for using flash at a fast shutter speed and cropping the black part, that is just silly, non-sensical and displays a total ignorance of the effect, use and control of flash/shutter/aperture/DOF, this technique would do nothing to improve the shallow DOF, nor would it having any effect on freezing movement, which is not actually an issue in this case

thanx Roger, your probably correct in your estimation of MCC
the other restriction there is the required size, minimum 8x10, so I can't/shouldn't enter there, so when I finish building the 8x10 camera...

great image Sion, sort of abstract
not sure about the colours though, colour slide film IR gives really weird, intense colours, may be PS's version is a little too subtle
anyway this image is strong enough to stand without any added effects
